Modern dance isn't anything except one thing in my mind: the freedom of women in America.
~ Martha Graham, choreographer
Dear Christine,
Having returned from an amazing cultural exchange trip to Ecuador, I am thrilled to share my experiences with you (see article below). In addition, this month we celebrate Women's History Month. As such, we should remind ourselves, our spouses, our mothers, our daughters--/and sons--/of the inimitable spirit, infinite potential, and invaluable roles of women in our culture and throughout the world.
I challenge everyone not only to research the many accomplishments of women throughout history but also to recognize the endeavors of such noted local women as artist Eunice Lafate (2007 Christi Award winner); educator/musician Fostina Dixon-Kilgoe (2009 Christi Award winner); playwright/activist Bebe Ross Coker; choreographer/CCAC dance faculty Dara Stevens-Meredith; or Delaware poet laureate JoAnn Balingit. You may also be interested to know that CCAC was founded by the Women's Club of Trinity Episcopal Church in 1946. In our 64-year history, there have been two women executive directors, including Cynthia Burke.
You can celebrate this month's importance through participation in a music, dance or art class at CCAC. Remember, too, you can enroll with ease online at www.ccacde.org. Phone and in-person registrations are always available and welcome, as well. Join us and celebrate our women--young and not-so-young--through the Arts!
Best wishes to all,
Raye Jones Avery , Executive Director

CCAC Faculty Return from Ecuador, South America on Cultural Exchange
CCAC Executive Director Raye Jones Avery and CCAC music faculty Norwood Coleman Jr. joined a group of teaching artists who traveled to Ecuador in South America. For two weeks, they collaborated on a community mural project with Ecuadoran high school students and shared music with elementary school students in the Amazon. The trip was engineerd through an organization called OneWorld Classrooms, a non-profit group that builds bridges of learning between classrooms throughout the world.
Norwood took part in the striking mural painting in Ulba at the Collesium and also joined the visits to Amazonian schools. All of Raye's time was spent visiting schools in the Amazon Rain Forest several hours away. Coleman and Avery led music workshops and help facilitate visual art-making activities.
The group has provided a wealth of photographs detailing their trip, including pictures of the mural painting. To view the photo galleries, follow this link: http://web.me.com/dgrasso/Ecuador/Ecuador_Photos.html
Raye says of her amazing experience: "The faces of these students and their families are simply unforgettable." Avery looks forward to future opportunities with students in Puyo and the cross-cultural exchange with CCAC & Kuumba Academy students during the 2010-11 school year.

Clifford Brown Year-Round: Maurice Brown Effect
Maurice Brown is one of the most exciting young trumpeters in jazz! His quintet, Maurice Brown Effect, performs fresh sounds while staying true to hard bop roots. After Hurricane Katrina, Maurice relocated to New York City and began an intense focus on both his individual sound, and the sound of the band, the Maurice Brown Effect. This year alone the band has performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, Cape May Jazz Festival, the Louis Armstrong Festival, Kansas City Jazz & Ribs Festival, and the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival.
